Sarah and I took our kids to the Colossal Cones soft opening on Friday evening, and I have to be honest. When we pulled up and saw the trailer for the first time, we both said the same thing. It is smaller than we pictured.
But smaller did not mean less. Sam was behind the window, warm and sweet, doing exactly what she came here to do. And from the moment we got in line until the moment we sat down at the wooden table out front, the whole thing just felt like the kind of evening this community is made for.
The line was constant. Our community really showed up.
I got the flavor of the week. Strawberry shortcake in a cup. And I need to tell you something about that strawberry crumble on top. Sam made it herself. You could taste it. It was not a topping out of a bag. It was real, and it was good, and it is exactly the kind of detail that tells you someone cares about what they are putting out.
My daughter went with cookies and cream on a cone. My son, who is usually very simple in his ice cream selection, went chocolate ice cream with caramel and mini marshmallows on a cone. He loved every ooey gooey part of it.
We found a spot at the wooden table out front and just sat there. There was a nice breeze coming through as the sun started to go down. Kids eating ice cream. Adults actually relaxing for a minute. The kind of Friday evening you cannot really plan but somehow always remember.
Nick and Samantha built something worth showing up for. And this community proved it. The line did not stop the whole time we were there.
If you have not been yet, go. Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5 PM. Right next to the Vail Coffee Stop at 13105 E Colossal Cave Road. Between the tracks.
